Integrate your online and offline marketing to create a bigger presence.

Start by building a web site and listing products, prices, upcoming events, etc.

Next, add your site URL to all print advertising - everything from your business card to an invoice.

Look for synergies between marketing channels. For example, if you have a big, honkin' toll-free number (one marketing channel) on the home page of your web site (another marketing channel) you create synergy by making it easy for site visitors to contact you with orders (some folks don't like to give credit card numbers over the phone).

Create a billboard on MySpace and Facebook with links to your site and that telephone number.

Blog other health and beauty sites, creating links back to your site.

Hook up with parallel sites - sites that sell to the same market but don’t compete directly with you. Exchange links.

Free online webinars; upload product images to YouTube; get listed with dmoz.org; become an authority by answering questions on Yahoo.

All free, guerilla marketing and it doesn't take a great deal of time.

At my university, I was going to get a marketing MINOR and loved all my classes that were really about marketing... But then I had to take a stupid, pathetic SALES class and it just pissed me off. I dropped my marketing minor because of it. I think marketing should be about advertisments and reaching an audience for a company, not about selling crap...

If I wanted to sell stuff I would become a f-ing car salesman?!
I would never personally consider marketing and sales the same thing. To me there is a huge difference between a marketer and a dam vacuum cleaner salesman.

Sales & Marketing are almost always the same division for medium and small businesses.
Why would you think you can get a minor emphasis without taking any sales courses. Requiring you to only take one makes a pretty shallow program.

Add'l Info: I agree that the concept of selling a car or vacuum, is not really tied to "sales and marketing" that's why I think your program is pretty piss pour. But most sales is not this low end sales.
- for example: you are are part of the sales and marketing team at Life Fitness, one of the largest gym equipment companies (they sell to gyms, hotels, apartment complexes, etc). There is a direct connection between the sales force and the marketing force.
- another example: The Gap = the sales and marketing team are directly connected How the clothes look in the store and online is directly tied to the company's marketing theme.

I know people in my line of work who are far more concerned with sales, marketing, and networking than the actual product that they put out. I, myself, am much more concerned with the product.

Are they onto something? Do I need to worry more about marketing aspects like they do?

For the long term, the PRODUCT must be solid,
You can sell whatever you want, even sell a nonexistent "product" and for a very short time get away with it. HOWEVER, for long term customer satisfaction and the GOOD NAME of your enterprise, the PRODUCT must be solid!
