Hello,
I have a pc which is quite old.. it has no wireless card and Wi-Fi (In short, nothing wireless!).
I recently bought a laptop which has Wi-Fi. Is there any way I can use my PC to create a wireless internet connection at home? If yes, please give me more details. I just want to have a single ISP.

To use more than one machine on an Internet connection you need a router. Buy a wireless router.

Start Menu>Run

type in cmd

in the CMD window type in: ipconfig

look at the IP address assigned to your default gateway
and type that in your browser window.

If it prompts your for a password try admin for the username and admin or nothing for the password. If these don't work consult the manual that came with the router.

If you get the password right you should be able to navigate to your wireless settings and it should be self explanatory from there.

Good luck.

Question by Jeff K: Can I send an internet connection through my ethernet card to my wireless router?
I get my internet from a wireless AP, but but my laptop has trouble recieving the signal.

So I want to use my desktop to recieve the wireless signal and then send the signal out to my wireless router through its ethernet card.

No clue how to do this successfully. Help!!
I know, it's a wierd deal. The laptop is pretty old. Got it second hand. plus it doesnt have ethernet connection. and I just wanted to setup my own router to act like a repeater. The desktop has a stronger wireless card and antenna.

Now how do you figure this? The AP has the line to the internet. So if your laptop is having trouble receiving the APs signal, how is it gonna connect to your PC?
You can use a crosscable to connect the laptop to your PC (if there's an ethernet card in the laptop as well), and have internet on your laptop through your computer. But most APs also have ethernetports, so if you have an ethernet card in your laptop, you might as well connect the laptop directly to your AP.
Or you could try setting up a second AP, closer to your laptop. That can work as a "go-between" between your laptop and the AP that has the internet connection.

Step 1Using your Web browser, go to the IP address of your router by putting its IP address into the address bar of your browser and pressing the "Enter" key. This is usually 192.168.1.1. If you are unsure of the IP address, consult your router software manual.

Step 2Once inside the router control panel, you may be asked to enter a password. For most routers, the default password is "admin," but if this does not work, consult your router software manual for the password.

Step 3On the router control panel, locate the section labeled "Wireless Security" and click on it.

Step 4Choose the WPA-PSK wireless encryption type, with TKIP security. This is one of the most modern wireless security encryption methods and is almost unbreakable with today's computers.

Step 5Enter in a password to secure your wireless network. If asked to re-enter your password, do so.

Step 6Click "Apply Changes." Depending on your router type, this button may say "Save Changes" or a similar phrase instead.

Step 7Wait for your router to finish applying changes and reboot. When you next attempt to join the wireless network using your computer, you will be asked to enter a password. Enter the password that you previously entered, and your computer will successfully connect to the wireless network.

Not only an insecure connection slow you down but you're runnin' the risk of exposing your personal info to other people.

Here's how to secure your wifi connection

It's different for every router.

Click Start/Run/ type cmd

A black DOS window should pop up. Type

ipconfig

press enter

Note the 'Default Gateway', it should be something like "192.168.1.1"

Type that exact thing into your web-browser (IE,firefox,...) and hit enter

Now, it will ask you to enter user name and password in order to enter your router configuration page. Since you haven't set anything up, the user name and password should be whatever the factory set up as default

Consult your router manual for the user name and password, it should be something like 'admin'

After you got the user name and password right. You're in

Now, look around and find the 'Wireless Security' section or some like that. The wording could be different but don't worry you'll get it

For the encryption type, remember to choose WPA or better yet WPA2. Do not choose WEP, it's weak and easily to break thru.

Set up the password.

Hit 'Apply' . Your router now will reset.

Now your wifi connection is secured. Good Luck

Question by Johnny: I get kicked off my wireless internet every time I'm on or my neighbor is on their portable phone?
I get kicked off my wireless internet every time I'm on or my neighbor is on their portable phone.

My wireless internet is from Linksys, I couldn't find much information on why this happens, but I'm getting tired of it.

I obviously can't ask my neighbor not to use her phone.

Is there a way to fix this or a wireless internet router I can buy that isn't interfered by wireless phones?

Wireless networks use the 2.4 - 2.5 GHz frequency band as do portable phones, microwaves, car alarms and lots of other devices.

Fortunately you have got a work around and that is to adjust your wireless channel.

Log into your wireless router settings and go into the WIRELESS section of your router. You should see a drop down box with a CHANNEL field, number 1 to 12.

Adjust your channel by about 4 or 5 channel places and then save the settings.

You do not need to make any adjustments on your laptop or computer, they will automatically adjust to seek the new channel.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc783011(WS.10).aspx

It might take trial and error to get the right channel that doesn't get affected by your neigbours cordless phone but you should be able to do it as the band itself is quite wide.

The method uses varies depending on what router you are using so consult your router documentation if you don't find it. It will be there somewhere in the router settings.

Did he perhaps configure this on your router, rather than on the local machine? The computer might remain associated to the access point/router, but the router might not forward traffic to/from that machine. Consult your router/Access Point's manual to see how to change this configuration.

Alternatively I would mouse over each of the other icons in the bottom right-hand corner, and see if any of the pop-ups indicate that the icon is for a program that is running that is preventing external communication. Then, if the name indicates that it might be such a program, right click or double-click on the icon and see if you can change the settings to stop preventing you from accessing the Internet.

Good luck.

How do I share my internet connection with my Liksys Wireless Router?

Question by Jose Q.: How do I share my internet connection with my Liksys Wireless Router?
When I put in the installation disk, I do all the steps right but when it comes to this one step it say's checking internet connection and it say's there is none. So how do I share it with my router?

Best answer:

Answer by Lisa B
plug your internet conection in to your router directly. Plug your computer in to the router. If your computer is set for dhcp, it will automtically pick up an address from your router and be able to communicate between your pc and your router. The installation software will help you configure the WAN links and security for the router. then your PC will be able to use the router to communicate to the internet.
